“It’s not how much we do but how much love we put in the action that we do.”
Mother Teresa
Nobel Prize speech
Judith, a pioneer attorney-mediator with more than twenty years of experience, trained in psychology, as well as law. Lol, a successful commercial and probate litigator with decades of experience and a previous career as a social worker. In 2007, two outstanding mediators – Judith Rubenstein and Lol Sorensen – brought their practices together to form Rubenstein & Sorensen Mediation.
“I used approximately 50 mediators in my career as a litigator,” says Lol about Judith, “and never found another with Judith’s ability to channel the powerful emotions seen in many cases. As a result, there were certain cases I only felt comfortable sending to Judith. I knew she would help the parties to find creative solutions and repair relationships.”
“I always considered Lol to be an unusually effective negotiator,” says Judith about Lol. “Many lawyers fall into the trap of positional bargaining and miss opportunities for a settlement that will benefit both sides. But Lol could always see the parties’ underlying interests and had an instinctive way of stimulating a collaborative response from the opposition. I knew he would make an excellent mediator.”
Writes a colleague of both, “It only seems natural that Judith and Lol would form a partnership. Both are quickly able to grasp the legal and financial aspects of any dispute and have years of experience in problem solving. But more so than other mediators, they understand the human dynamic underlying conflict and have the skills needed to channel emotions in a way that moves the case to settlement.”
Judith and Lol work as independent mediators and maintain a wall of confidentiality about their cases, except when a case calls for co-mediation.
